This Could Be My Motto

Let's be honest. I have kind of an obsession with quotes and I have a lot of mottos. They all apply to different aspects of my life and they're great, simple reminders of who I want to be and what I want to do.

I just found a quote by Martin Luther King Jr. that is a great one for my business and really, everyone should add it to their motto list.

"Everybody can be great...
because anybody can serve."

This is not an idea original to MLK, of course. Jesus told us this in Matthew 20:26. Our human nature tells us that to be great we must be famous and powerful. But who made the most impact on your life? Think about people like Mother Teresa. Often, the people who are the most servant-like and humble are the people we see as great. Sure, the world doesn't usually see them, but to the people they serve, they are the greatest people in the world.

I'm probably not going to ever be great in the eyes of the world. It could happen but for most people, we don't achieve worldly greatness. That's fine because I'm here to serve. I'm here to serve my clients, my friends, my family. Those are pretty easy places to serve. I'm also here to serve my neighbors, strangers, and people I don't like. (Much harder). I'm going to fail at times. We all do. Our goal though, is to serve and serve and serve.

Serving in business is different than in our personal lives. I serve you as my client but I'm also getting something in return. However, in our personal lives, true service has no strings attached. We expect nothing in return. Serving can be "big" like volunteering at a soup kitchen, or it can be small, like doing something for a sibling.

Short and sweet today, but I encourage you to look for ways you can serve today, right where you are and in whatever the day holds for you!
