If you are wanting to have in-home photos taken with your Christmas tree and decorations, then we want to be strategic in thinking through where that tree gets placed! I know that sometimes there aren't a whole lot of options, but if you do have some wiggle room for where you put your tree, then I have a few things you should keep in mind. Natural Light
If you've read any of my blog posts on indoor sessions, then you know this by now, BUT you want to set up your tree in a room with lots of windows or a big window and you don't want the tree directly in front of the window! To put it simply, you want to be facing the window yourself with the tree behind you. (If you need help, texting a photo of the room you're considering to your photographer will allow them to see the space and make suggestions). Where Are The Distractions? Once you have the room selected, try to pick a wall or corner that isn't busy or distracting. If you have artwork on the wall, take it down for the photo. Try to avoid placing your tree right next to your TV! You don't want that in your photos and your photographer will love you for not making them have to crop it out :) Where Can You Sit Or Stand? You want to take the photo in front of your tree so we need to make sure there is room for your family to sit/stand! If you put your tree in a corner between your couch and an armchair, then we don't really have room for you to gather around. A corner is not necessarily a bad place so long as there is not furniture crowding around. Is There A Better Option? The Christmas tree is a tried and true photo backdrop but if your house makes taking photos with your tree impractical, what other options are available to you? Maybe you have a fireplace draped with a garland and stockings. Or maybe you have a lovely wreath on the wall above your couch. If you're really up for adventure, perhaps you've decorated outside and want to use that as your background. Don't get stuck on using your tree if it doesn't work or if making it work will bring headaches and stress. We can think outside the box!!

Hi! I'm Sarah!
I am a natural light portrait photographer. I've been taking photos since 2014 and would eat a smoothie from Tropical Smoothie Cafe for lunch everyday if I could. Thank you so much for stopping by. I blog about sessions, things I'm learning, stuff in my life, and information for YOU, my client. If you like what you see around the site, I'd love to work with you! I'd also love to connect with you on Instagram. I'm @sarah_jayne_photo :) Archives
