Sometimes you just can't take photos outside. As a natural light photographer who doesn't have her own studio, this was a huge road block for me for YEARS until I found some studios that understand natural light photography! I am so excited to be sharing about three different locations - Studio Neue, Collective Howell, and The Glasshouse/Studio 3505 - that all will serve you well. Because I moved after starting my business, I have clients in two geographic spheres that only overlap a little bit. It was a big point of emphasis to find at least one studio in the general area of both of my client circles and I'm pleased to report that I did! You will notice that my example photos are very Christmasy :) I toured these spaces in November when they had their Christmas setups but the general idea is always the same and they change what props/setups they have throughout the year. For my clients in the Livonia/Northville/Novi/Plymouth-Canton/Farmington Hills area, we have Studio Neue. Located in the Old Village of Plymouth, this space is fantastic in that it can double as an event rental as well as a photography studio. Why is this important? Well, I have been asked a few times to come take extended family photos at a Christmas or birthday party. You know, a time when everyone is together anyway. That's a great way to kill two birds with one stone, but it often means that there isn't really a great place for your photos. Most event spaces are ONLY event spaces and are not created with photography in mind, much less natural light photography. I love that there is light coming in from multiple directions in this space with windows on two walls! Studio Neue has multiple backdrop options and some props/seating choices. One of my favorite things about this venue is that you can do a virtual tour to see if it will work for you! Keep in mind that this is in Plymouth and there isn't a ton of parking space. It's pretty much the only downside. However, parking is right next to the building, which is fantastic! Great for: Large Families/Extended Family events, Branding sessions, Newborn/Milestone sessions, Christmas photos My other client group lives in South Lyon/Brighton/Howell areas and I have TWO options for you. The first is Collective Howell, which as you might have guessed, is in Howell. It's pretty much the same as Studio Neue: open space for photography AND events, limited parking (unfortunately the best parking is just across the street from the building), and you can to a virtual tour. Unlike Studio Neue, this space is owned by a natural light photographer, so there is that much more thought put into making it natural-light friendly! Great for: Large Families/Extended Family events, Branding sessions, Newborn/Milestone sessions, Christmas photos This last one is more unique. The Glasshouse is a greenhouse so you get the full benefits of natural light but are out of the weather. They even have heaters for the cold months so it is still nice enough to be "outside". In addition, there is Studio 3505, a small indoor studio with lots of windows and different themed setups through the year. These spaces are small, so they are best for brand photos, small family sessions, newborn/milestone sessions, or other sessions with just a few people. However, it is a darling place and if the weather is nice, you are also able to be outside on the property. It's a great setup and the couple who owns it are phenomenal to work with! Both spaces have props provided and there is a client wardrobe for babies and toddlers (size and style varies). If you are interested in that, I can get photos of the options from the owner. Whether you need photos for your business, don't want to worry about weather, don't want to clean your house, or need space for an event and photos, studios are a wonderful resources that have so many benefits! Which space is your favorite?
