Life Away From The Camera

I have lots of hobbies. I like to play games, scrapbook, listen to baseball/watch my brother and cousins play, hang out with friends. You know, normal things that most people like to do. (With the exception of baseball :) But what is my favorite thing to do when I'm not taking pictures? That's not a hard choice. In fact, this might be the easiest "what's your favorite..." question I could be asked.

My favorite activity is not very active at all.

I love to read.

I am a voracious reader. So much so, that I pretty much take a book everywhere I go. Even if it's just driving five minutes or I'm driving myself somewhere and there's almost no chance of needing a book, I usually take it anyway.

For most of my life, I read exclusively fiction. All kinds of genres of fiction, but still fiction. Non-fiction to me meant reading about tornadoes or insects. I don't know why I thought non-fiction was only science or those discovery encyclopedias, but that's what I associated it with. In high school, Probably junior or senior year, I decided I needed to start reading more educational books. Now, to be fair, you can learn from fiction, but it's harder to do because you can't always know what's real and what's made up.

I started reading biographies and a whole new world opened up. I love reading biographies because they take a period of history and show it to you through a person's life. My brother and I both love reading about WWII, but he reads about battles and general things while I read about the people like Corrie ten Boom or Bonhoeffer. I also like reading "Christian living" type books. Kind of theology and everyday life combined. Jefferson Bethke, Craig Groeschel, and Kyle Idleman kind of books.

This year, with seriously starting my business, I read a business book each month. Some were more interesting and helpful than others, and believe you me, if I wasn't trying to start my own business, I never would have read them. The things you do for what you love.
