Fun Winter Activities

We haven't gotten much snow this winter, or in several years actually, but when I was a kid, we had lots of snow and my brothers and I loved playing in it!!! We like to make snowmen (especially for our Grammy), we've made snow forts, and we like to eat snow too (only clean of course!). We've done a lot of different things over the years and while it is always fun to just play, there are a few ways to make snow extra special.

Dyed Water - When we were little, we had special spray bottles that held colored water. I honestly don't know if there was anything special about the dye but I think it was just food coloring and water. We would build a snowman and then spray the colored water all over it until it looked "amazing" :) You will definitely have the most unique snowman on the block!

Snow Cream - I had never heard of this fun winter treat until a friend told me about it last year. It's fun, unique, and yummy! Here is a recipe if you want to try. You have to be quick though, because the snow melts very fast! I added Hershey syrup to mine and it was good that way too.

Ice Rink - My grandpa used to make ice rinks in his backyard and we could go skating!!! It was so much fun (even though all he had were hockey skates). We haven't done it in years, because our winters don't get cold enough for long enough anymore to make it worth it. Ice rinks are A LOT of work.

ATV Sledding - This one requires some land and/or snow-c0vered streets in your neighborhood. Oh, and an ATV :) But if you have access to one, this is quite possibly my favorite thing to do in the snow! We tie sleds to the back of the ATV with rope and then drive all over! When you go around curves, the sleds slide out to the side and it is just the most fun ever! We always have someone riding on the back of the ATV watching the people on the sleds so that if one falls off we can alert the driver and to watch for cars coming if we are in the street. My grandparents live on a dead-end street so there isn't much traffic.

Dyed Ice Balls - You need a REALLY cold day for this to work well but they look so cool when they're done! You just put water and food coloring in a balloon and then put it outside. After the water is frozen, you cut off the balloon and you're left with a colored ball of ice! Quite the eye-catching decoration! This "recipe" says you can use drink powder too and it has a slightly different effect.
