Christmas Time

I just have time for a brief post.

All that snow that we got a week or so ago? It all melted in a week where we had several almost 40 degree days. I was super bummed. But on Christmas Eve, it started to snow. We were supposed to get 1-3 inches. Plenty for a nice, white Christmas and playing with the four wheeler. We ended up getting more like 3-6 inches! It was fabulous! We had a blast with the sleds and four wheeler. There's something about a white Christmas that's just better.

Hope you had a Merry Christmas!

Family Portraits // The R Family

The best was when we got the cats.

Emily lit up holding her cat, which was almost as big as she was, or so it seemed. The cat would slip and Mom would help her readjust, with me snapping pictures the whole time. It was precious, so sweet, and lots of fun.

This was my first referral job.

A friend from church texted to see if I could take family portraits for her cousin's family. They were a joy to work with and were very patient as we figured out the lighting. Their son did such a great job, standing and smiling while we tried to get his sister to smile. Despite having a headache, she did a great job too. They were so sweet and kind.

Even throwing the family pets into the mix was easy. The animals were still; the dog was afraid of me! Thankfully we did the cats last, as they got white hair all over the kids :) I got my share of cat hair on me, but you do what you have to do to get the shots.

We moved people in and out to get all the combinations and poses they wanted and it went so smoothly, we were done it about an hour!

You were such a gracious family to work with and I am so glad I could serve you. Enjoy your photos!

Amazing Amount of Snow

This picture is actually from a winter or two ago at the entrance to our woods, but it's so beautiful I had to share it.

I love snow. Winter is one of my favorite seasons. I'd much prefer to be cold than hot. The snow makes everything so beautiful and gives a purpose to the cold. However, we actually don't get a ton of snow where I live and we usually don't have much before January. White Christmases aren't normal, sadly.

But this year, we got a TON of snow this week. It snowed all day long one day and we have about 8 inches! It's incredible and I'm thrilled! We may actually get a White Christmas this year.

When my brothers and I were little, we'd build snow forts (hollowing out the piles by the street) and play for hours outside. Now, we play less, but we still love to use the four-wheeler in the snow. As little kids, our grandpa would tie sleds to the back of the ATV and pull us around. Now, we are big enough to drive it! But it's still fun to have Grandpa do it.

If we go out and just play in the snow, it's usually with my little cousins. I'm looking forward to playing with them on Christmas.

Another thing we try to do every year is make our Grammy a snowman. When there is packing snow, we go over and assemble one. Some years, he's very small and might only last a few days, but she still gets him. We try to surprise her by doing it when she's not home :)

Winter is here and it's finally looking like Christmas!

Family Wedding in Ohio

The lanterns floated up and away; the only stars on a cloudy night. They truly did look like stars, floating up by the moon that was shining through a break in the clouds. It was the perfect ending to a beautiful wedding filled with special moments. You could see the intentional touches in so many places throughout the celebration.

My cousin got married a week ago today and I had the honor of photographing her special day. This was my first wedding, so it was nice that it was family and a low-stress situation. I'm very thankful for all the help my grandmother was in directing people, because I had no clue what I was doing!

The day was beautiful and warm. As you can see from the pictures of the bride, we were outside without coats in December in Ohio. But trust me, it got cold in the evening. They had a lantern release, which was amazing and beautiful, but definitely cold. I’ve never seen a lantern release in real life and I’ve always wanted to experience one. Since I was doing the pictures, I didn’t get to actually participate, but that was fine. The experience was enough.

Everything was beautiful. The couple wrote each other letters that they read before the ceremony. The ceremony was simple and so sweet and wonderful. The pastor gave a fantastic sermon and the couple read the vows they wrote. There was so much thought put into every element of the day.

Christian and Cheyanne, thank you for trusting me with your wedding day. It was an honor and privilege to serve you. I hope the images will remind you always of the love that brought you together in the first place. When times are tough, may you think back to this moment in time and let it strengthen you to push through. Dietrich Bonhoeffer said, "From now on, it is not your love that sustains the marriage, but your marriage which sustains your love."

Starting Out

Welcome!

I don't want to bore people in my bio with the story of how I started in photography, but it's a great story for a blog post.

My brothers and I got cheap kid cameras for Christmas one year. Those didn't last long :) Then we got a slightly more expensive (still less than $100 I'm pretty sure) camera that we all shared. It was creatively called "The Kid Camera". In 2014, my family was going on a trip across the country to the Grand Canyon. This is a once in a lifetime trip. You need a camera capable of taking good pictures. The Kid Camera wasn't going to cut it. Neither was our current family camera - a point and shoot. So for Christmas 2013, I asked for a camera. A real camera. A FujiFilm Finepix. It wasn't a DSLR, but it had pretty impressive zoom. I didn't know how to use a camera like that, so for the majority of the time I owned it, I was using automatic mode. Which is fine.

Sitting on the third-base side, all the way at the top, I could zoom in to this view. Pretty awesome, right?
I really was enjoying taking pictures and I was thrilled (still am) with the ones I got on our trip.

At some point, I started thinking, "maybe this is what I want to do with my life." There were a lot of attractive things:
  • I liked it
  • I could work from home
  • Set my own hours
  • Fit it to my stage of life
  • It would allow me to still be a homeschool mom while bringing in a little extra money
I wasn't sure at first, but it gave me a convenient answer to The Question all teens get asked, "so, what do you want to do?" But the more I said it and thought about it, the more it solidified. Yes, this was it.

What began as an answer to satisfy the curious became a passion and dream.

I share about the Image Bearers name under the tab of the same title, but Image Bearers is what turned this into something more than a job. It made it a ministry. I want to make money, but I want to serve more. There is an amazing book entitled Called To Create that drove home what was sort of cemented in my mind, but now it's firmly there. I highly recommend the book to any and everyone.

This is about so much more than photographs and money. It's about people.

So there you have it. A little back-story on how and why you're here today reading about a photographer named Sarah. Thank you for stopping by and I hope you consider coming along on this journey with me.

Blessings,
Sarah
