Memories // First Day of Co-op

7/30/2018

I was homeschooled my entire life, so the beginning and end of school were kind of a fluid thing. People talk about memories from their first day of school, but I don't have that really. What I do have is a memory of my homeschool co-op starting.

Nervous About Getting Your Picture Taken?

7/27/2018

"People are often nervous about getting in front of a professional camera. It's your job to help them relax and have an amazing experience".

This is the advice that has been drilled into me by photographers who are farther down this road than I am. Today, I'm going to confess something to you.

I don't like getting my picture taken.

The Meaning Behind My Business Name

7/25/2018

Amy & Jordan Demos talk about having a "why" behind every decision you make in your business. They say that anyone should be able to ask you about anything on the site or in your business model and you should have an answer.

I'm trying to keep that mind set and it's particularly true with my name.

Weekly Rest

Several years ago, I read Jefferson Bethke's book "It's Not What You Think". It was as good as "Jesus > Religion" and I own both books, which tells you how much I like them. Anyway, I read INWYT and it was very enlightening to me, especially the chapter on the Sabbath.

I remember when she told me she was pregnant.

It was after church, the week before VBS, and she wanted me to know because it might affect how she was able to help me and the group that week. Her son was barely one.

Nothing Makes Me Happier

7/16/2018

One of the things that brings me the greatest joy as a photographer is knowing that people love the photos I take. I so enjoy taking pictures and I'd do it even if no one else wanted them, but it's nice to know that people appreciate them.

I'm very uncomfortable with spoken compliments. Telling me, "I love the photos" makes me squirm a bit, but using them tells me the exact same things.

I took tons of pictures during my brother's junior and senior year on his baseball team and shared them with the team through Shutterfly Share. Some of those photos have been put on photo boards at graduations and one mom this year told me that she made a photo book of her son from the pictures I took.

When people put my photos as their screensavers and profile pictures, it makes me glad because you only do that to photos you like. On the wall of my friend's home, almost all the photos are ones I took of her kids.

I don't want this to sound boastful or prideful, but this is part of why I do this job. I want to help people preserve their memories in a tangible way that they will love looking back upon. Seeing people sharing these photos tells me that I'm succeeding in my goal and that makes me happy. Nothing makes me happier than making other people happy.

Happy Friday, everyone! I hope you have a great weekend. We have graduation parties for my brother this weekend. What do you have going on?

Trends, Fads, and New Tools On Instagram

7/16/2018

Instagram just rolled out their new 'Question' button for IG Stories. Personally, I'm excited about anything that adds more interaction between the account user and their followers. I think the polls are fun and I liked the 'heart-eyed emoji slider'. They are fun ways to participate in what someone posted.

Some people are acting almost embarrassed to be using this new tool. I'm not really sure why that is. People get excited about new things and want to use it. Are they concerned with getting sucked in to a fad or looking like they are just like everyone else? I'm not sure, but I think it's fine to use what you want to.

For me, as a business profile, I'm always trying to interact more with my followers. I have a rather diverse following, from all over the world, if you can believe that (I can't!), and I try to encourage interaction.

I'm excited to see how this new release by Instagram could help me connect to my followers and make running my business even easier. As a business account, I love it and will be using it. As someone who follows other people, I like the opportunity to ask people questions (when I can figure out a question to ask!). Go use that question tool and enjoy!

"He doesn't even drink coffee!"

This in response to my comment on how one of us was a morning person and it wasn't the women. A 6 am session would not have been my idea, but the light is gorgeous and makes it worth the early hour. Other than a few fishermen and a ton of Canadian geese, we had the area all to ourselves. For the beginning of July, it was actually a bit chilly! I was surprised.

Everyone talks about the "ideal client" or your "target audience". I have had the hardest time figuring out who that is for my in my business. But more and more, I'm starting to slowly get an idea of just what that might look like.

He Was Going To Wear Jeans

7/9/2018

The bride-to-be offered to meet me at the location where she and her fiance were hoping to have their photos done. We spent twenty to thirty minutes exploring and I was figuring out what might work. As we were getting to leave, she mentioned what they were thinking about wearing.

"I have a white dress and he'll probably wear jeans and a collared T-shirt".
