If I Had A Tattoo

My granddad liked to give me and my brothers a hard time about our temporary tattoos. It became a fun game where we'd put them on and then show him as soon as possible. We'd taunt him, "Look, Granddad, we have tattoos!" and he'd moan and groan. It was fun.

Truth, Life, & Family

It's taken me some time to boil it down to these three words. For the first several years of my business, I tried to keep my personal thoughts, feelings, and beliefs out of the business while still putting "me" into it. The events of this year have made that almost impossible and shown me how futile that philosophy is. What I believe influences all my decisions and actions. There is no separating them from my business.

You'd think that being related to the photographer, you'd get your photos done more quickly but that's not the case :) My poor brother has had his pictures taken piecemeal because, "hey, we can do these any time". Well, they are finally all done!

A dress worn by mom. A toy that was dad's. A blanket made by grandma. The high chair or cradle made by great-grandpa. Family heirlooms are precious. They hold so many memories and connect us to the past. I absolutely love it when people include historical items in their sessions!!

Changing The Narrative Starts With Words

Words are powerful. They are heavy with meaning. Our media and our politicians know this and the words they use are telling and full of purpose. Words can influence us to think a certain way, possibly without knowing it. I bet you can think of some examples if you try.

I've become more aware of the words I say and think and how they affect me. Knowledge is the first step to changing. If you don't know something exists and is a problem, you can't change it.

How My Graphic Design Class Helped My Photography Business

6/17/2020

In high school, I took a graphic design class one semester at my co-op. I like designing things and it sounded like fun (plus one of my favorite teachers was teaching it). One of the things I learned very quickly was that most of my favorite fonts were "no-nos" in graphic design. Drat :)

It was a fun class and I did learn a lot. What I didn't know was that it would prove very useful years later in my photography business.

Some Good News

I always like to hear good news but it seems like we have extra need of it right now, am I right? Some of the biggest things I lost when the country shutdown I've received good news about! There's a light at the end of the tunnel and I can't wait to get there but I'm pleased to be getting to the next step.

A Drive - By Celebration

I am SO glad my mom didn't tell me any earlier than she did. Keeping secrets is HARD, especially when you live with the person. I had to think through each thing I wanted to say, to make sure it was okay to be said to my brother!

Last Saturday, May 30th, was supposed to be my brother's graduation ceremony. Obviously, that did not happen. My mom cooked up a drive-by surprise to have something special on the day anyway. (It turned out that my brother didn't even remember that it was supposed to be his graduation, but she didn't want it to go by unnoticed. It was tricky, but we pulled it off and he had NO IDEA!!!

Black & White vs Color // Ever Wonder Why?

6/10/2020

Picture
A few weeks ago, I did a "this or that" post with questions I gathered from Instagram. One question was "black & white or color". It's an interesting question that doesn't have a good answer. I want to explain a little bit about why photographs kind of tell you which way they need to be. I realize that might sound crazy, but as I've edited, I start to know when a photo needs to be B&W.

Liberty Is Essential

I always take some time to think things through when they are topics like this. Not because I think I'll change my mind, but because it doesn't always need to be said. Maybe the timing is wrong or my phrasing is not as kind as it should be. If I shared my thoughts as soon as I thought them, things would be said that I would probably wish later I had done differently. I am passionate about things that matter but I want to be sure I'm respectful and coherent, not reactive. All that being said, this is important.
