Week 1 Of Quarantine

3/30/2020

Starting last Tuesday, Michigan entered a three-week quarantine. Before, we couldn't go anywhere really except other people's houses. Now we aren't even supposed to see others in person. For three weeks. The hardest thing is knowing that there is no light at the end of three weeks. They'll just reevaluate then.

The other hard thing is that more and more bad news keeps coming. My cousin was going to play baseball at Cooperstown this summer and I was going with them. That's cancelled. The Olympics are cancelled for the summer, to be done at a later date. My friends from Nebraska were coming after Easter and now they aren't. It's funny the things you didn't know you had left to lose.

That's a lot of sad news so is there any good news? There actually is.

Things To Do With Your Kids While In Quarantine

A lot of people have their kids home full-time right now and that's not normal. Kids and parents are struggling to adjust to a new schedule. Struggling with the transition does NOT make you a bad parent or mean you don't like your kids. It takes time to figure out how to work well together. And you may find that there are a lot more disagreements and tension because that's what happens when people spend all day, every day together. On top of that, this is not a situation we chose, so our attitudes can be a little out of whack (or is that just me?).

I want to offer some ideas of things to do while we are forced to have limited interaction with people. I have gathered these from different places; I didn't come up with them all on my own. But first, one of the funniest memes I've seen lately:

When To Schedule Your Newborn Session & Why You Even Want One

You're having a baby! Congratulations!!!! You have a lot of things to be thinking about (kind of like after getting engaged) and even if newborn photography is on the list, you probably have it waaayyy down there near the bottom because, after all, you don't need to worry about it for nine months, right?

Even if you yourself are not expecting a baby, you might know someone who is, so this might be helpful to them :) Keep reading for my reasons why you might want to plan your newborn session sooner rather than later and my thoughts for people who aren't sure if they want to do a newborn session or not.

When it comes to my social media and blog, I've been ignoring current events. I want something to still be normal and we're getting enough of all this virus stuff everywhere else, so why bring it into this space as well? Frankly, because to not talk about it is going a little too far.

My Social Media Tips OR How To Control Social Media & Not Let It Control You

I am a fan of social media but I am also wary of it. I'm also a big proponent of making things work for you and not letting them control you. I feel sad when people get so fed up with social media that they feel the only recourse is to delete it all.

Now, some people legitimately do need to delete some or all of their apps for a time to reset. But when you come back from a reset, what changes? What will stop the cycle from repeating itself? What if you could stop yourself from getting that far in the first place?

I believe that we can have a good relationship with social media and things like email and texting. I think there are two main elements that we need to consider: our own tendencies and grace.

When I Worked As A Gemstone Photographer

It was a total God-thing. In the summer of 2017, my friend and I worked a table for Orin Jewelers at a small fair. It was a one-time thing and we had fun doing it. In the course of getting the details of that job, I was talking to my contact and it came up that I was a photographer. She mentioned that she might have a job for me but she'd have to get back to me on that. I was just thinking, "the random things that lead to jobs!"

Why Light Colors & Neutrals Are Best For Your Photo Session

I'm not one who always has to know the "whys" behind things, but sometimes it is nice. Usually I'm fine with accepting an expert's word. After all, they are the expert and they know what they are talking about. From time to time, it is nice to get a reason for why I am doing what I am doing.

Today, that's what I'm giving you. We are going to talk about the reason I, and many other photographers, highly recommend light colors and neutrals for your photo sessions!

I love to read. I read constantly; usually at least two at a time, one fiction and one non-fiction. Today's lists will just involve fiction books in a few different categories: trilogies, series (anything more than three books), action/suspense, and single books.

Setting Expectations

In one form or another, you've probably heard the idea of your career coming after your family. I'm sure we'd all agree that it's important, but it can be hard to put into practice, especially for people who work from home. How do you keep a good "work-life" balance when your work is always available to you? You can't just "leave it at the office" if your office is also your living room. This takes some intentional thought and I believe it starts before you ever have a family.

What Do I Do Besides Photography?

I don't spend all my time taking photos and I have other passions that have absolutely nothing to do with photography, but they are all connected with my underlying passion of helping and serving people. That passion is fueled by my faith. If my interests and the things I pour into were a tree, the root would be faith, the trunk would be building and encouraging others, with the branches being the different things I do. So what are those things?

    Hi! I'm Sarah!

I am a natural light portrait photographer. I've been taking photos since 2014 and would eat a smoothie from Tropical Smoothie Cafe for lunch everyday if I could. Thank you so much for stopping by. I blog about sessions, things I'm learning, stuff in my life, and information for YOU, my client. If you like what you see around the site, I'd love to work with you! I'd also love to connect with you on Instagram. I'm @sarah_jayne_photo :)
