Am I In The Wrong Job?!

It's funny how something seems so normal to you but then you start to realize that it really isn't normal at all! That is what's been happening to me as I realize my professional journey has been anything but normal!

I Learned Wrong
Only in the last year or two have I found an educator who is a family photographer and teaches directly to that experience. Almost from day one, I was learning from wedding photographers. How? Well, I just took their principles and figured out how to apply them to a portrait and family photography business. But what this means is that my entire business has been impacted by the wedding photography industry. My workflow, client experience, and even my marketing practices are all formed from the starting point of how wedding professionals do things. This is drastically different from most other family & portrait photographers!!!

I'm The Wrong Age
Most photographers my age are wedding or senior photographers. Notice I did NOT say that most wedding and senior photographers are my age. That's not true at all! But people in my age demographic are most able to relate to brides and seniors because that is their stage of life too! It makes sense. Most family photographers tend to be married with families of their own. I am not. So why do I do family and portrait photography? Because I LOVE families and kids!!!

Do What You Love & What You Know
I have been working with kids since... forever! I've worked with every age and, being homeschooled, family is very important to me and something I know well. Maybe most photographers my age know high school and weddings better, but I know families and kids. From the beginning, I knew that I wanted to do families and portrait work. That includes seniors, for sure, but I photograph seniors as part of family life.


So am I in the wrong job? If you look at others my age in the photography industry or other family photographers, you might say yes. But what you wouldn't know is that I have unique experiences that make family and portrait work the perfect job for me!
